What evocative writing, Jennifer. Recording songs from the radio, those were the days! And when I did buy an album (or cassette), I listened to it until I knew every song. This TUNE! Stirs up some memories for me, too. Wonderful writing.
Thank you so much for reading and the kind compliment! Iām so glad it evoked something for you .Ha, glad you relate to memorizing every word of every song! Not many of my friends understood my music obsessions! and whew, this song was such a stirrer! so glad you enjoyed. thank you!
Love this mini-memoir, Jennifer! That song was important to me, too. Songwriting and Substacking have a lot in common, I think--public soul-sharing. Glad to have found your writing.
Thank you so much, Michael! Itās true, songwriting and substacking are forms of public soul-sharing! Itās fascinating how we can soul share in these ways but in our everyday life, conversations with friends and loved ones? All is fine. All is good.
Glad you found me and vice versa. Looking forward to reading more of your work! I found your last recently and was enthralled; saved it for later! š š Really looking forward to reading more
I love that song. i tried to sing and play it on the guitar. I can't do it. Shannon Hoon, was a bit of a mess I understand. I always have that image of him wearing a dress at Woodstock 94, out of his head.
I love it, too! I donāt play guitar, but if I did, Iād def try to play it. Is it a tricky one? And ha! I think Iāve seen that image. Sad he died; we lose so many good ones to drugs. I was a little too young to understand fully, but I felt those lyrics, deeply. I understood the melancholy and ache behind them. My first taste of letting artists articulate my own mess!
I'd agree. I was young when this came out. And it's one of those songs that sounds so evocative and catchy. But when you read the lyrics you get something different. I actually just rewatched that video, and I don't know what he's wearing š I did read a bit behind the scenes and the rest of the band said he wasn't very nice and was on a lot of drugs. It's a different version here. I loved woodstock 94 when i was in my teens. So many great bands. It's not difficult on the guitar. I just couldn't sing it. I'm still not that good, but i like doing it. I just nailed Good Riddance by Green day. No one but me and the dog. And she puts her paws over her ears. š
Yeah, totally melancholic song lyrics, with the upbeat music, right up my alley. I love that kind of juxtaposition.
Haha, in that Woodstock video heās in all white like a kundalini yoga teacher! š thatās a bummer to hear he was a jerk. and thatās funny; I bet your dog really enjoys Good Riddance! You should post a recording sometime š
Oh I'm not at that stage yet. I can write poetry baring my soul's inner most torment. But to inflict my voice on another human when even the dog doesn't like it. nope.
Regarding upbeat music and melancholic lyrics. I have to mention 'Born in the USA' so many people pump their fist in the air to that. And have no clue to the lyrics. Love it.
Oh my goodness Jennifer, too bad I can't award you with the Feature! This is fantastic! There's no doubt why you chose this song, and you pulled me right in with you.
Thank you, Jeff! Appreciate you reading and seeing it as a thoughtful glimpse⦠ā¤ļø
And youāre so right, thereās something to bearing our souls publicly, to many peopleā¦the commiserations and catharses! Glad weāve connected. Looking forward to slices of you, too. š global linear soul, I like that!

And, isn't it interesting that we both pulled opposing themes from our song choices? https://storiesfromthejukebox.substack.com/p/ive-got-it-bad
Thanks so much. MJ! Yeah, I really have loved this song ever since it resonated with me as a child. Glad it pulled you in with me!
I can see why you chose your song, too. You do have it bad for C. (And I also see you dropping your competition link here in my comments. š š )
Gotta play to win! š
